Homeschooling and Sports

Sports and homeschooling have always been a point of contension between some homeschoolers. There is one camp of homeschoolers that believe in the purity of homeschooling which is to raise a child that will be able to stand in the gap for their faith and another camp that believes in creating many opportunities for their child so that they don't miss out on anything.

 

Many homeschoolers have placed their children back into public or private school due to a lack of options for sports.  The question always comes down to what is the home education vision for your family.  Are you wanting your son or daughter to get scouted and then drafted into some major sports league or are you trying to instill values and morals into your son/daughter.  I cannot answer your particular vision question for you but I can say that there are many different options for homeschoolers and sports. Sports are very important to a child's development in that they can learn sportsmanship, conduct, teamwork, and applied effort.

 

Here are some options for your child and sports that you may not have thought of:

 

See if your local public school has a program where you can enroll your student into the school for just sports.  There is still a risk that you child will be exposed to some corrupt elements but you can use these as opportunities to teach and train your child.

 

In addition can also enroll your child in one of the local club sporting leagues in your city.  Usually these can be found in your local parks and recreation advertisements.

 

A final option is for you to start your own sports league and invite whom you will to join.  This is the option that the PSP sports league has opted for.  This last option allows you to hand pick who your child will be hanging around and allows you to engage and train your child in some awesome sporting activities.  Sporting scouts are all of over the place and if your goal is to get you child scouted then it's up to you to create opportunities for them to be seen.

The Homeschooling Buzz Episode 3

Iowa Wrestler Defaults Match Rather Than Compromise His Conscience

"As a matter of conscience and my faith I do not believe that it is appropriate for a boy to engage a girl in this manner."

So check this one out.  A homeschooled boy named Joel Northrup made national news when he defaulted on his first-round state tournament match rather than wrestle Cassy Herkelman and Meagan Black, one of the first girls ever to qualify for the event.  Northrup wrote: "I have a tremendous amount of respect for Cassy and Megan and their accomplishments.  However, wrestling is a combat sport and it can get violent at times.  As a matter of conscience and my faith I do not believe that it is appropriate for a boy to engage a girl in this manner.  It is unfortunate that I have been placed in a situation not seen in most other high school sports in Iowa."

Northrup's decision has sparked a national debate about co-ed wrestling.  Presently, it appears the majority agree with Northrup.

We live in a society where things are changing pretty rapidly and I can only imagine what challenges my kids will face but I was very pleased by the back bone of this young man to risk a media backlash and maybe even his teammates ridicules to stand up for what he believes.

Is America progressing to a communist state?

I just watched a video called AGENDA: Grinding America Down and it was pretty powerful.  It's goal is to "expose the communist, socialist, progressive attempt to take over America".  The documentary presents the connection between the different communist, socialist, progressive organizations with great clarity and shows how they have implemented their agenda to dismantle American patriotism, morality and sprituality.  This video is not strictly about homeschooling, although homeschooling is mentioned as one tool to combat the problem.  Anyway checkout the video below.
