11 The Homeschooling Buzz - Interview with Debbie Feely and Homeschool Convention Recap

In this episode we will be doing a recap of the Pacific Homeschool SuperConference that occured this past week. In addition we will also be talking to Debbie Feely, homeschool mom of 2 and author of the book "Preschool At Home: What Do I Do With My Child Before kindergarten".

"The educational choice made by a parent has a predictable spiritual result in the lives of children." ---Mike Farris

Show Notes:

Episode 11: Interview with Debbie Feely and Homeschool Convention Recap

Debbie and Jerry Feely first heard of homeschooling in 1985, when their first born was five years old. Homeschooling was a natural and right choice that best fit their chosen lifestyle.

Jerry and Debbie homeschooled their sons for thirteen years. Both boys fit the description of gifted with special needs. Schooling was mostly challenging; their children never just did the book. Jerry's conviction that homeschooling was the only right thing kept them going. Their favorite parts of homeschooling were reading aloud together and taking long family vacations camping in National Parks.

In 1988, the Lord put it on Debbie's heart to work with CHEA so she began the first of what is now more than 20 years working with CHEA.She currently works as CHEA's Education Consultant and serves with the Regional Advisory Board. In addition she also found time to author a book.

Topics Discussed:

Played clip which included sound bites from Mike Farris, Alex and Brett Harris, Tim LaHaye and Phil Downer.

Homeschool Convention Recap. What did we like about this years convention. What touched us about this years convention. Who were some of our favorite speakers and memorable moments.

Susan Beatty Prepares for Interview with Family News in Focus

Susy, Beverly LaHaye, Tim Lahaye and LaHayes' granddaughter JennyHey peoples, Susan Beatty will be doing an interview with Family News in Focus on Thursday April 14, 2011 which is scheduled to air on Saturday and Sunday April 16 and 17, 2011. She will be talking about the Pacific Homeschool SuperConference that occured this past weekend and will be doing a recap of the event. I was tasked with creating some sound bites from the convention to be used in the interview. The first clip is just some crowd noise to set an ambient feel for the interview. The second clip with Dennis Agajanian playing his guitar is pretty awesome.  His fingers move like lightning over his guitar. Anyway, I ended up recording the whole song since it was so good and I just could not bring myself to chop it up. I figure the guys at Family News in Focus will do that. So listen to Dennis and Enjoy! As soon as the interview is posted I will include a link to it in this post.

President Obama on Cutting the Deficit by $4 Trillion Dollars in 12 Years

Ok.  So President Obama laid out his 12 year $4 Trillion dollar deficit cutting plan at George Washington University Today. We shall see how his plan plays out after they are finalized since he said that the completed plan may look nothing like what he is talking about today.  Hmmm... What does that mean? I have no idea.

Anyway, If you missed the speech he gave you can listen to it here.

California Homeschool Convention: Pacific Homeschool SuperConference Wrap Up

Gerald McKoy with Tim and Beverly LaHayeWow! Wow! Wow! What an awesome homeschool convention we had this year.  The Pacific Homeschool SuperConference was just such a blessing to our family. Each time we come to these northern california homeschool conventions it reminds me why we are homeschooling.  We were able to meet and listen to many of our homeschool heroes such as Tim and Beverly LaHaye, Alex and Brett Harris, Mike Farris, Phil Downer, David Quine, Sharron Angle, Roy Hanson and many others.Gerald with Phil Downer

It was a challenge getting to the convention this year, as we had many different situations come up that almost caused us to miss it, such as my wife's grandma dying a few days before the convention and my sister in law getting married 3 days before leaving for the convention and my 6 year old son breaking his arm 1 day before we were to leave for the convention, but, we made it. Consequently, we were definitely blessed by the speakers and the wisdom they shared. I personally think that Satan makes it difficult or puts road blocks up when something ground breaking is about to occur.

Steven Covey, in his book The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, says that you must Sharpen the Saw. You must renew your physical, social/emotional, mental, and spiritual self and we find that attending these Christian homeschool conventions definitely does that for our family. The importance that these conventions have is in the support you receive from other like minded Christian homeschoolers. Tim and Beverly LaHaye presented with an award from Mike Farris and Mike Smith of HSLDA

Digital communication is great but in person is way better. When you get around like minded people with varying ideas about how to do something it just gets your creative juices flowing.  It also creates the much needed growth and catalyst for change in your life, like the iron sharpening iron passage in the bible. As you talk with other homeschoolers face to face or listen to the speakers you begin to gain new insights and ideas, and your current vision is challenged and expanded.

If you were unable to attend the convention this year, don't worry.  I will be doing a recap of what went down at the convention.  We will listen to sound bites of some of the speakers and talk about some memorable moments at the convention so tune in.
