The Christian Home Educators of California hosted this free webinar which was inspired from their 2012 Bay Area homeschool convention in Santa Clara where many parents were seeking options for their highschoolers after graduation. The traditional road to college did not appeal to many of these parents. Many parents wanted their children to earn a degree and gain life experience at the same time. However, the question is "what exactly does that look like today?" and "How can we achieve this in a down turned economy?" Well... collegeplus shares some interesting and eye opening insights on the current state of higher education and provides strategies for making this a reality.

If so then keep reading...

Today, students leave college with an average student loan debt of about $30,000. Only 53% of entering college freshmen graduate within six years, and almost half of college sophomores show no significant improvement in learning compared to when they entered college. At the end of it all, students often have no idea what they want to do with their life, and, sadly, they discover that only about half of their graduating class can even find a job.

It doesn't have to be this way. What if there was a way for your students to discover their life purpose first and then build a college education around that? What if they could earn a college degree debt-free in less than four years? What if your students could be 55% more likely to find a job upon graduation because they were spiritually mentored and prepared to pursue their God-given calling?

by David Morgan

Here are a few simple tips that will guide your child down the path to becoming a confident and happy reader. Keep them short and sweet; never impose any reading exercise for more than 10-15 minutes:

1 Play “Phonic I Spy”
The sounds that make up words are called phonemes, and it is crucial that your child learns to hear them. Play the classic “I Spy” game, but instead of using the letter name, use the first sound of the word, like “sh” for shoes.

2 Play “Clink Clink Clink”
This is another simple little game you can play anywhere to familiarize your child with different sound patterns. First, you say a word. Then your child says a word that either has the same initial sound OR rhymes with the word. Repeat back and forth until someone is stuck. Here is an example; fish, wish, wine, whale, bail, sail, etc… Both of you tao something [“clink, clink, clink”] between the words, and each player has to give the next word straight after the third clink.

3 Play “Build-a-Word”
Get a set of plastic letters or fridge magnets. Think of a simple word that uses the basic sounds connected to each letter (i.e. a, e, i, o, u are “ah” rather than “ay”, “eh” rather than “ee”, “ih” rather than “eye”, “aw” rather than “oh”, “uh” rather than “oo”). Examples include bid, had, wed, mud, cod etc. Then try to get your child to build the word from a small group of 6 letters that include the ones needed.

4 Play “Nonsense Words”
Using the same set of letters, think of simple nonsense words like wup, pog, gub, bip, that also use those basic alphabet sounds. Write out a nonsense word with the letters and get your child to try reading it. The nonsense approach circumvents your child resorting to guessing the word instead of sounding it out.

She is is a mother of four with a love for God’s Word, her family, homeschooling, science, and encouraging homeschool parents. Jeannie began speaking and writing in college as a sportscaster for the University of Texas. Following graduation and marriage, her writing and speaking shifted to the Christian community where she focused on teaching marriage and parenting classes, in addition to writing articles and Bible studies. After her homeschool journey began, Jeannie discerned an immense need for Creation-based, scientifically sound , engaging, easy-to-use science curricula offered by Apologia. And with a background in science at the University of Texas and a lot of tenacity and coffee, the Apologia elementary science courses got their start.
